SRQ Airport Expansion: What It Could Mean for Sarasota Travelers

Sarasota Bradenton International Airport continues to plan for the region’s growing travel demand.

On September 20, 2026, SRQ announced the availability of a draft environmental assessment covering a proposed expansion of its passenger terminal and parking facilities. The proposal includes three additional aircraft gates, approximately 65,000 square feet of new concourse space, and a four-level parking garage with about 3,700 spaces.

The project remains under environmental review and has not yet been announced as an active construction project. However, it provides a clear look at how SRQ may prepare for future passenger growth.

What Is Included in the Proposed SRQ Expansion?

The Sarasota Manatee Airport Authority is considering several connected improvements.

Three Additional Airport Gates

The proposed concourse expansion would create a two-level connection between the existing ground-level portion of Concourse A and Concourse B.

It would provide three net additional gates, along with expanded passenger circulation areas, hold rooms, restrooms, concessions, security facilities and airport support space.

Additional gates could allow SRQ to accommodate more flights during busy travel periods and provide greater flexibility as airlines add or adjust service.

A New 3,700-Space Parking Garage

The proposal also includes a four-level parking garage south of the passenger terminal, across from the existing curbside roadway.

The garage would provide approximately 3,700 parking spaces. It could significantly increase the amount of airport parking available to passengers, visitors and other airport users.

Relocated Rental-Car Facilities

Rental-car customer facilities would move from the baggage-claim hall into the proposed parking garage.

Bringing rental-car services into the garage could create more room inside the terminal while consolidating rental-car activity into a dedicated facility.

Why Is SRQ Considering an Expansion?

Sarasota Bradenton International Airport has experienced substantial growth as more travelers choose Sarasota, Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Siesta Key, Longboat Key and surrounding Gulf Coast communities.

SRQ now provides nonstop access to numerous destinations across the United States. Its convenient location also makes it an increasingly attractive alternative to Tampa International Airport for travelers staying in Sarasota and Manatee counties.

The proposed additional gates and parking capacity indicate that airport officials are planning for continued long-term demand rather than treating recent growth as temporary.

What Could the Expansion Mean for Travelers?

If the project moves forward, passengers could eventually benefit from:

  • More gates and room for additional airline service
  • Improved passenger circulation between concourses
  • Expanded terminal waiting areas and amenities
  • More airport parking
  • Modernized rental-car access
  • A terminal better prepared for busy seasonal travel periods

The project could also change how vehicles circulate near the passenger terminal. Any future construction would require careful coordination of passenger drop-offs, pickups, rental-car movements and commercial transportation.

Travelers should remember that these changes are still proposed. The environmental review does not establish a construction start date or completion schedule.

Will Airport Transportation Change?

No immediate change to SRQ’s current passenger pickup procedures has been announced.

Passengers using private car or limousine service should continue following the transportation instructions provided with their reservation. Travelers arriving without a reservation can also visit the ALD Limo transportation desk near Baggage Claim #3 for SRQ’s select on-demand sedan and SUV service.

As the proposed expansion progresses, temporary roadway patterns or pickup instructions could eventually change. Travelers should confirm current airport procedures before their trip, especially after construction begins.

The Public Can Comment on the Proposal

SRQ’s draft environmental assessment concludes that the proposed project would not create significant environmental impacts when required laws, permits and standard mitigation practices are followed.

The public review period remains open through November 4, 2026. Project documents and submission instructions are available through the official SRQ draft environmental assessment.

Planning Transportation to or From SRQ

Airport growth can create more travel options, but passengers still need reliable transportation between the terminal and their final destination.

ALD Limo provides private airport transportation between SRQ and Sarasota, Bradenton, Siesta Key, Longboat Key, Lakewood Ranch, Venice and other Southwest Florida destinations. Service is available for scheduled reservations and arriving passengers seeking on-demand transportation at the airport.

Professional airport service can include flight monitoring, luggage assistance, direct transportation and vehicles suited to individual travelers, families and larger groups.

Looking Ahead

The proposed SRQ expansion is an important sign of Sarasota and Manatee counties’ continuing development as major Florida travel destinations.

Three additional gates, expanded terminal facilities and thousands of new parking spaces could help SRQ accommodate future passenger demand while preserving the convenience that has made it popular with local residents and visitors.

For now, existing airport transportation and pickup procedures remain in place. Travelers should watch for official SRQ announcements as the environmental review and planning process continue.
